Causes of IPP (induratio penis plastica)
IPP, also known as Peyronie’s disease, is characterized by the formation of fibrous scar tissue in the sheath of the erectile tissue and thus by a hardening of the penis (plaques). The exact cause of IPP is not fully understood, but there are several theories and risk factors:
Microtraumas and injuries: Repeated minor injuries to the penis, such as during sexual intercourse, can cause scarring. These microtraumas sometimes do not heal properly, leading to plaques forming.
Genetic factors: Men with close relatives suffering from IPP may have a higher risk of developing the disease.
Autoimmune reactions: It is also possible that IPP is triggered by an autoimmune reaction in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the tissue of the penis.
Tissue changes due to age: The elasticity of the penile tissue can decrease with age, increasing the risk of injury and scarring.
Relation to other diseases: IPP may be associated with Dupuytren’s contracture, diabetes mellitus, or cardiovascular disease.
