Circumcision
Religious or cosmetically motivated procedure – a millennia-old ritual
Circumcision is an intervention that has its origins in religious and cultural traditions. It was already being practiced in ancient Egypt over 4000 years ago, often as part of a ritual rite of passage or spiritual commitment. In Judaism, it symbolizes the covenant with God, while in Islam it is a sign of purity and belonging. Even today, it is still frequently performed in many societies, especially in the Middle East, Africa, and the U.S. – for religious, hygienic, or aesthetic reasons.
Circumcision in the Anglo-Saxon area
While circumcision is rather rare in continental Europe, it has developed into a medical and cultural standard in the U.S. Here, around 77% of all male infants are circumcised – often due to hygienic considerations or social pressure. The topic is so present in pop culture that it is even openly discussed in American films and series. Such openness may be unusual for Europeans, but it shows how differently this intervention is perceived around the world.
The great controversy –
pros and cons of circumcision
Arguments in favor of circumcision:
Hygiene: Removing the foreskin makes cleaning easier and reduces the accumulation of bacteria.
Health benefits: Studies show that circumcision can reduce the risk of urinary tract infections, HIV, and other sexually transmitted diseases.
Aesthetics: Some find the appearance of a circumcised penis more appealing.
Arguments against circumcision:
Loss of sensitivity: Removing the foreskin can lead to a reduction in sexual sensitivity, as erogenous zones are removed.
Risks: As with any surgical procedure, there is a risk of complications such as infection or scarring.
Criticism of infant circumcision: Opponents argue that infants and children are incapable of consenting to such a procedure and that it is a violation of their physical integrity.
Myth or truth – Circumcised men can “last longer”
There are studies that indicate that circumcised men can last longer during sexual intercourse. This could be because the glans area is less sensitive due to constant exposure and keratinization. At the same time, some men report a reduction in the intensity of their orgasms, which is also due to the loss of sensitivity.
